Tierra del Fuego is home to the only colony of King Penguins in South America. Being one of the most important destinations of the regional offer.
Tierra del Fuego Island has a surface area of ​​22,593 km², being the largest island in Chile and South America. Its characteristics in relation to climate, geology and history make it a unique place. It is made up of 2 large areas; the northern part is a steppe area, where cattle ranches abound and the southern part with large forests, lakes, mountains and glaciers. The island can be reached by sea, in a 2-hour navigation crossing the Strait of Magellan, reaching the port of Chiloé Bay, 5 km away is the city of Porvenir; founded in 1894 to serve the cattle ranches of Tierra del Fuego.

Itinerary

  • 07:15-07:45 The passengers are picked up at their accommodation in Punta Arenas, to transfer to the Tres Puentes terminal. Where the Ferry to Tierra del Fuego is boarded. The crossing of the Strait of Magellan by ferry takes approximately 2 hours.
  • 11:15 -13:30 By minibus, transfer to the cultural city of Porvenir, 5km away from the port, where you can visit the Fernando Cordero Rusque Museum, a square in honor of the Selknam, and time for lunch in the city.
  • 13:30 Departure to King Penguin Park, 105km from Porvenir. Located in the Bahía Inutil sector, where you can see the only King Penguin colony in South America.
  • 15:00-16:00 Visit to the King Penguin Park. Where they are given an informative talk and the penguins are observed at a distance of approximately 25 to 30 meters.
  • 17:00-18:00 After a 45-minute journey, you will arrive at Cerro Sombrero (a small town of oil origin), where a stop is made at the monument to oil.
  • 18:00-18:30 Subsequent crossing by ferry of 25 minutes of navigation in Bahía Azul.
  • 18:30-20:30 Return from Punta Delgada to Punta Arenas. Making a stop at a historic site, “Estancia San Gregorio”.
  • 20:30-21:00 Arrival in Punta Arenas approximately.

Recommendations for this tour:

  • Bring identity document. Without your documentation, you cannot board the ferry.
  • Bring cash for entry or check per day (There is payment by card, but there is not always a good internet signal)
  • Bring cash for lunch. It is considered a stop at a restaurant for lunch in Porvenir or Cerro Sombrero.
  • Bring warm clothing. Especially in autumn-winter (hat, gloves)
  • Carry cell phone and cameras, fully charged.
  • It is not recommended to take the tour, in case you have a flight on the same day at night. The return time of the tour is always subject to weather conditions. It is also not recommended to buy tickets to Puerto Natales the same day at night.
